Without membership (manual mode - you’re in control)

You decide what to do and when, using the data and resources in the app. Your Gardyn operates on proven default lighting and watering schedules designed to grow healthy plants.

You can absolutely grow successfully without membership - you’ll just take a more hands-on approach.

You’ll:

  • Check the app for updates and plant status

  • Adjust lighting and watering if needed

  • Use the Plant Book and Help Center for guidance

Best for: growers who enjoy being hands-on and learning as they go.

With membership (guided by Kelby)

Kelby monitors your Gardyn and guides you on what to do and when, helping you grow with confidence. You’ll still perform regular care like pruning, harvesting, and maintaining your tank just as you would without membership.

You’ll get:

  • Personalized tasks and reminders (so you never have to guess)

  • Automatic watering adjustments based on plant growth

  • Real-time alerts and proactive guidance

  • Continuous optimization using sensors and cameras

Growing successfully without an active membership

Your Gardyn was designed to grow beautiful, nutritious, and flavorful plants with or without an active membership. Many Gardyners successfully grow without membership using the built-in tools and schedules available through their Gardyn device and app.

Here’s what growing without membership looks like and how to get the best results with a more hands-on approach.

While advanced guidance features are part of the Kelby experience, the Gardyn app provides routine tank refresh reminders, plant care resources such as the Plant Book and Help Center, and controls to manage your lights and water. The device also includes default lighting and watering schedules designed to support healthy plant growth, so you do not need to adjust these settings before you feel comfortable doing so.

These settings support a wide variety of plants and growing conditions, providing a reliable foundation for successful growth without constant adjustments.

30-day Kelby trial

All Gardyn devices receive 30 days of Kelby guidance at no cost when they are paired with the Gardyn app for the first time.

During this trial period, Kelby provides tasks, reminders, and guidance to help you get started with your new Gardyn and support your plants through their early stages of growth.

After the 30-day trial ends, Kelby guidance is available on Gardyns with an active membership. Your Gardyn will continue to function normally, and you can still manage your lighting and watering schedules through the Gardyn app.

Managing your Gardyn’s lights and water

Without membership, you’ll take a more hands-on approach by periodically checking your Gardyn and making adjustments as needed. Many growers enjoy this process and find it rewarding. You can manage your Gardyn’s lighting and watering directly from the Gardyn app. These controls allow you to view and adjust your device’s settings whenever you need to.

Default lighting and watering schedules

Your Gardyn includes default lighting and watering schedules designed to support healthy plant growth across a wide variety of plants.

These settings allow your plants to grow successfully without requiring adjustments. Kelby can further optimize watering schedules based on plant growth stages, but your Gardyn’s default settings provide a reliable foundation for growing healthy plants.

You can adjust your lighting and watering schedules any time in the Gardyn app to match your environment or preferences.

Water level maintenance and tank refresh reminders

The Water controls widget on your app’s home screen shows the current water level in your tank. For best results, maintain the tank level at 80% or higher. You can learn more about best practices for topping off your tank here: How to Top Off Your Tank with Water and Plant Food

The widget also includes Tank Refresh reminders, which are available for all Gardyn devices. After completing a tank refresh, you can log it in the widget to start the countdown to your next refresh.

A reminder will appear on the water widget 7 days before your next tank refresh is due, indicated by an orange dot. If the refresh is not marked as completed by the due date, the dot will turn red.

Automatic completion detection

In some cases, your Gardyn may detect that a tank refresh has already been completed through its smart sensing system.

When this occurs, the app may automatically mark the tank refresh as complete for you. If this occurs, you do not need to mark the task manually; the countdown to your next tank refresh will begin automatically.

Plant care and growing resources

Your Gardyn was designed to make growing fresh food simple and successful. With the default lighting and watering schedules, helpful app controls, and guidance available in the Plant Book and Help Center, you have everything you need to care for your plants and enjoy your harvests.

The Gardyn Plant Book (available within both the app and Help Center) provides helpful information about the plants you are growing, including:

  • Days to sprout and maturity

  • Thinning and placement requirements

  • Recommended light zones

  • Plant care level

  • Harvest guidance and recommended uses

As your plants grow, you can continue exploring the resources in the Gardyn app and Help Center to support each stage of your Gardyning journey. The Help Center includes guides on topics such as:
