Adding Plant Food for the First Time
DO NOT ADD AT SETUP! Watch the video to learn more!
The same steps and tips are written below.
...Remind me, what does the plant food look like?
Every new Gardyn comes with a bottle of our plant food. Note that this is not the same as HydroBoost. Your Gardyn Plant Food will have this label:
The HydroBoost label says "HydroBoost", and is below for comparison:
How will I know when to add plant food?
Kelby will tell members precisely when your Gardyn is ready for a sprout dose of plant food with a task! How? Through Kelby's unique ability to detect sprout growth - you only receive this task once Kelby detects the majority of your yCubes are ready.
Be sure your notifications for the Gardyn app are enabled so you don't miss this important task from Kelby. Most Gardyns will be ready for this task within the first 2 weeks of germinating new plants on their Gardyn, though the exact timing will vary based on environmental factors.
How do I mix and add plant food?
Please note that these instructions are only for adding plant food for the first time. Kelby will provide you with these details in a task, along with slightly different instructions for adding plant food later on in your Gardyning journey.
For the curious and those who like to plan ahead, the same steps are copied here for your convenience:
1. Reference the recommended dosages: 1/4 teaspoon (Sprouts) or 1/2 teaspoon to 1 gallon of water (True leaves).
Fill a 1-gallon container with warm tap water, add the recommended amount of Gardyn Plant Food based on your plants’ growth stage and variety, then shake to mix. The Gardyn Adjustable Spoon makes plant food dosages easy with a sliding adjuster and only the 3 measurements needed for Gardyn Plant Food.
1/4 teaspoon per 1 gallon of water (Sprouts)
1/2 teaspoon per 1 gallon of water (True Leaves & Early Growth)
Tip: Upcycle common 1-gallon containers, such as water jugs or milk cartons. Just ensure it’s clean before using it.
2. Mix or shake to dissolve and add to your tank
While Kelby detected the majority of your yCubes have sprouted, it's best to double-check for any unsprouted yCubes Kelby may not have seen. Unsprouted means you don’t see growth above the rockwool. If you see unsprouted yCubes, initiate a water cycle manually by tapping the water level tile on your home screen, then toggling water to on. After the watering, remove the unsprouted yCubes and place them in a Nursery or tray with a ventilated lid so they can continue germinating. (Plant food inhibits germination!)
3. When you receive your task in the app, it will let you know if you need to add more water - just water, no additional plant food!
A full Gardyn Home tank holds 5 gallons of water, and a full Gardyn Studio tank holds 4 gallons. If your tank’s water level is lower than these amounts after completing your first plant food task, Kelby will prompt you to add more water (without plant food) to maintain the right nutrient and water balance.
4. Have HydroBoost? Add it now!
