Preventing A Total-Gardyn Cleaning in 5 Easy Steps

Edited

We’ll walk you through each tip so that you can keep your Gardyn clean for as long as possible! Remember, it’s much easier to maintain your Gardyn with a little weekly routine than it is to clean it all at once.

When we say cleaning, we mean a full Gardyn cleanse, which is different from a tank refresh. There’s no way to avoid tank refreshes, as they’re crucial to supplying fresh water and nutrients in a clean tank to help your plants thrive.

1. Keep up with your regular root checks and root pruning

When left unchecked, roots can grow into your columns and create an internal root jungle. These pieces become quite difficult to remove down the line.

Kelby will remind you when it’s time to check all of your plants’ roots. Remember to tuck any strays back inside the yPod, and trim any that won’t fit.

Regular, smaller root prunes signal your plant to grow new, healthy roots. This prevents root rot, and helps your plants flourish by keeping their foundations healthy and strong.

2. Regularly add HydroBoost with every tank top-off and refresh

HydroBoost is our specially formulated plant-based water treatment system. It not only balances pH, but corrects and prevents root rot.

It’s safe to add HydroBoost once your Gardyn has plant food in it. You can shop for HydroBoost, including discounted multi-packs, directly in the app!

3. Keep your tank full by topping off as soon as Kelby alerts you

Younger plants don’t drink as much as mature plants, so you’ll notice the frequency of your top-off tasks increases as your Gardyn grows.

Top-offs are essential for bringing fresh water and nutrients directly to your plants. The longer the water in your Gardyn circulates without fresh additions, it grows imbalanced as certain plants naturally absorb some nutrients more than others, much like a picky eater!

Only when you break this cycle by topping off with fresh water and plant food does your tank environment get rebalanced, giving your plants more of what they need to grow big and healthy.

4. Refresh the tank as soon as Kelby sends you a task

Much like tank top-offs, tank refreshes further aid in resetting your tank environment, with the added bonus of keeping any would-be tank growth in check.

Think of top-offs as water stations in a road race, providing little sips to keep your plants going. Then, at the end of the race each month, your plants are ready for a full water bottle and a snack - this is the tank refresh!

By combining fresh water, fresh plant food, and a sponged-down tank, you’re giving your plants the nutrients and clean environment they need to reset each month.

5. Keep any unused slots on your columns covered to prevent algae

Algae is a simple organism that can grow any time nutrients in water are exposed to light. When you have open slots, the water that drips through your columns every water cycle carries plant food, and inevitably splashes around your columns. These wet areas then sit, exposed to your Gardyn’s full-spectrum light, and grow algae as a result.

It’s ideal to cover open slots with an opaque cover, like Gardyn Caps, to prevent the light coming through. Covering unused slots also prevents anything else unwanted, like flying insects, from entering your columns directly.
