Origin
A succulent flower native to the arid plains of Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay, Portulaca is also known as Moss Rose or Purslane. It has been used medicinally for centuries and is now widely grown in home gardens for its drought-resistance and vibrant flowers.
Qualities
Portulaca is entirely edible. This mix has double flowers, meaning each flower has two layers of petals, in shades of white, coral, magenta, and yellow. The green leaves are thick, smooth, and firm, resembling rosemary in shape with a slightly salty and crunchy flavor. Portulaca is high in antioxidants and vitamins A, C, and B1 while also having antibacterial properties.
Use
Enjoy Portulaca’s beautiful flowers as they add bright pops of color to your Gardyn. You might try a leaf for a salty crunch, or use the flowers as an upscale garnish.
Care & Harvest
🌱 Germination: Germination and true leaf growth can be slow, but the vibrant blooms will be worth it!
💡Temperature: Prefers warmer temperatures (70-80°F), but can tolerate down to 60°F.
✂️ Pruning: Check the roots monthly and trimming any that are brown or extending past the yPod. To encourage new flower bud development, remove dead flower heads, called deadheading. Snip any yellow or brown leaves if they appear, but as always, leave one third of the plant behind to let it continue growing so you can enjoy multiple waves of blooms.
🔎 Plant Health: Does not thrive in oversaturated environments, so we recommend enabling Kelby Assist (or maintaining our standard water schedule) for optimal growth.
🌻 Harvest: Begin harvesting once your plant reaches 10 inches in height. You can harvest single leaves or flowers by pinching them off, or using clean shears to cut stems above growth nodes. Enjoy your flowers anywhere in your home cut-free by using the Gardyn Vase! Alternatively, to use as a cut flower, snip the stems at a 45° angle just above a leaf node at the desired height.
