Origin

Also known as cockscomb, prince feather, wheat celosia, and red fox, Celosia’s name comes from the Greek kelos for “burning” due to the flowers’ flame-like shape. It is native to Africa, North and South America, where people traditionally harvested the plant for its leaves rather than its flowers.

Qualities

This Celosia mix reaches 2 feet tall with bright, flame-like blooms in magenta, orange, and yellow. The dark green leaves provide a beautiful contrast and are edible, though they become bitter once the plant flowers.

Use

Celosia makes a standout cut flower either fresh or dried. To enjoy fresh, snip at the base of flower stalks once flowers are fully developed and their stems are firm. For longer-lasting, dried flowers, harvest at the same growth stage, remove all of the leaves, then hang the stems in a dark, well-ventilated place to dry. Celosia leaves are edible and taste like spinach when young, but once the plant flowers, the leaves turn bitter.

Care & Harvest

🌱 Germination: Germination and true leaf growth can be slow, but your patience will be rewarded with showstopper flowers!

✂️ Pruning: Check the roots monthly and trimming any that are brown or extending past the yPod. To encourage new flower bud development, remove dead flower heads, called deadheading. Snip any yellow or brown leaves if they appear, but as always, leave one third of the plant behind to let it continue growing so you can enjoy multiple waves of blooms.

🔎 Plant Health: Aphids are a common pest, but you can use our prevention tricks to keep pests at bay!

🌻 Harvest: Enjoy your flowers anywhere in your home cut-free by using the Gardyn Vase! Alternatively, to use as a cut flower, snip the stems at a 45° angle just above a leaf node at the desired height.
