Origin

The earliest species of Canna Flower was first cultivated by Native Americans and indigenous peoples across the tropical Americas for thousands of years as a food source (the rhizome root is an excellent source of starch!). Today there are many hybrid cultivars, including this showstopper color combo, chosen for their tropical beauty. Canna Flower grows wild and has naturalized in warm regions all over the world. The name Canna in Latin means cane or reed, reflecting the plant’s long, straight stems.

Qualities

Deep purple leaves and stems bear clusters of bright orange flowers that bloom in multiple waves off of the main stem. When transplanted outside, the plant can grow up to 4 feet tall and sends up new shoots. In warm climates, Canna Flower is a perennial. Without deadheading, spent flowers develop spiky seed pods that rival the flowers’ intrigue!

Use

Historically favored as a starchy food source, today most people grow Canna Flower to embrace its aesthetic beauty.

Care & Harvest

🌱 Germination: Canna seeds require a well-drained environment, so we recommend germinating them off of your Gardyn using the soak method. To do so, let the yCube sit in water up to the top of its plastic and soak for 5 minutes. Then, place it in a Nursery or tray without adding any more water, and add the lid. If you already have other yCubes or Microgreens germinating with water in your Nursery, keep your soaked Canna yCube separate. You can learn more about the soak method in your app’s Sprout School!

🫶 Support: We suggest placing Canna Flower in a bottom moderate light spot so it can grow tall while staying in your Gardyn’s light, then using our Plant Belt to support its tall stalks as it matures.

✂️ Pruning: Check the roots monthly and trim any that are brown or extending past the yPod. To encourage new flower bud development, remove any fading flower heads by snipping at flowers’ individual stems, known as deadheading.

🌻 Harvest: Enjoy these tropical flowers through multiple waves of blooms from the main stem, then plant outside in warmer months to continue to enjoy its flowers and watch it grow up to 4 feet tall! In warm climates, Canna Flower is a perennial.
