Reviving yCubes from Premature Plant Food Exposure
What does premature plant food exposure mean?
Premature plant food exposure means a plant came into contact with plant food before its growth was ready to support the extra nutrients. This occurs when:
Unsprouted yCubes are exposed to a sprout dose of plant food
Sprouted yCubes that don't show 1 of these 3 signs and are exposed to a full dose of plant food
Why should I care?
Plant food inhibits germination, and can harm young sprouts if they're exposed too early to a full dose.
What should I do?
Don't panic! If you act fast, you can remove these yCubes to let them continue growing until they're ready for plant food without many - or any - negative consequences.
Psst...If any of your unsprouted yCubes are over 28 days old, let us replace them for you!
1. Remove the yCubes from your Gardyn and rinse them with tap water to remove any traces of plant food. If the yCubes are unsprouted, it's best to rinse them from the side to avoid the water pressure pushing the seeds too deep into the rockwool, making it harder for them to sprout.
2. Place your rinsed yCubes in a Gardyn Sprout Nursery. Don't add any water to the tray, pop the Nursery's lid on top, and place it on your Gardyn's lid. While the Nursery is the best option to boost germination speed and success, you may also use a tray with a ventilated lid to get started.
3. Check on your yCubes' every few days to assess their hydration level. Aim for a mottled look on the rockwool with both light and dark green, as shown in the middle Nursery in the image below. This means they're still well-hydrated! Only add water to your Nursery when yCubes appear all or almost-all light green, indicating they are dry.
From left to right, yCubes that are oversaturated, correctly saturated, and undersaturated.
4. Move the yCube back to your Gardyn based on whether you have a sprout dose or full dose of plant food in it. yCubes only need to have growth above the rockwool to be added to a Gardyn with a sprout dose in it. To be added to a Gardyn with a full dose of plant food in it, meaning you've already refreshed the tank at least once, a plant should show any 1 of these 3 signs. Add the yCube to a clean yPod and place it on your Gardyn so it can start receiving plant food again.
