How Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) Impacts Your Gardyn

Edited

In Gardyn, your nutrient solution (plant food dissolved in water) directly feeds your plants minerals, so there’s no need for a complex soil food web. Without soil, however, there's no beneficial microbes keeping pathogens at bay to control the development of bacteria in your Gardyn.

Refreshing your tank regularly helps manage bacteria most of the time, but some Gardyners wish to give their plants a boost, especially when it comes to root health. The best way to do this is by regularly adding our plant-based water treatment solution, HydroBoost, to your Gardyn once you have plant food in your tank and are out of Germination Mode.

When combined with regular tank refreshes and root maintenance, HydroBoost can replace not only your quarterly Light Cleaning, but also weekly additions of hydrogen peroxide! Learn more about HydroBoost here!

If you still choose to use hydrogen peroxide instead of HydroBoost, it's important to use only 3% H2O2, like you find in stores' first aid section, and no stronger. H2O2 is a sterilizing agent safe for your plants, but deadly to the microscopic bacteria and fungi present everywhere. By routinely adding H2O2, you're helping to safeguard your plant roots from diseases, bacteria, and fungi.

To keep things simple, use:

  • 1 Tablespoon H2O2 per gallon of water when topping off

  • 5 Tablespoons of H2O2 in a full tank (when refreshing your tank)

If you follow these recommendations, your plant roots will thrive in the healthy, clean environment you're providing for them, helping your Gardyn thrive, too.
