Origin
Lettuce is thought to have originated in the Middle East, with the earliest depictions of it appearing in Egypt around 2700 BC. Ancient Egyptians bred lettuce plants to be less bitter than their wild counterparts, and used oil from wild lettuces for a variety of applications, including mummification. Muir lettuce is a hybrid variety named after the famous early naturalist, John Muir.
Qualities
Muir lettuce has lime to light green leaves that are extra wavy and frilled! The leaves grow to form a small, dense head at an early age, and their classically crunchy leaves are juicy with a mild taste. Muir lettuce is a type of Batavia lettuce, which are known for their crisp, sweet, and juicy, leaves with high heat tolerance. Lettuces are particularly high in vitamin A, and Potassium, which supports blood pressure, cardiovascular health, bone strength, and muscle strength.
Use
Muir lettuce is a great alternative anywhere you’d use Iceberg or Romaine. You’ll love it on sandwiches, burgers, and as a base for salads.
Care & Harvest
💡Temperature: Muir lettuce forms the best head in direct light without any other plants blocking its way! Placing it in a Medium Light Zone on your Gardyn ensure it gets sufficient light while maintaining the relatively cooler temperatures (60-70°F) that lettuce prefers.
✂️ Pruning: Check the roots monthly and trim any that are brown or extending past the yPod.
🥬 Harvest: For ongoing harvest, snip the outer leaves just above the base of the plant once they reach 4 inches tall to let the inner leaves continue to grow. Leave 1/3 of the plant if you want it to keep growing. To harvest the full head, wait until it reaches maturity, then harvest from the base.
