Origin
Zinnias are a dry grassland flower native to a large area stretching from the Southwestern United States to South America. Mexico and Central America have a particularly high species diversity, with flower stalks ranging from 4 inches to nearly 4 feet tall in reds, purples, yellows, whites, and oranges.
Qualities
This compact Zinnia still offers plenty of wow-factor blooms in shades of white, pink, orange, yellow, and red. It begins blooming at just 3 inches tall, and grows up to 12 inches. Zinnias are completely edible.
Use
Zinnias make amazing cut flowers thanks to their straight stems. You might also try the flower heads or just the petals as edible garnishes, as the center of the flowers can be quite bitter.
Care & Harvest
π‘Temperature: Prefers warmer temperatures (70-85Β°F), but tolerates down to 60Β°F. Prefers moderate humidity; too much humidity can lead to an unhealthy plant.
βοΈ Pruning: Check the roots monthly and trim any that are brown or extending past the yPod. Snip any yellow or brown leaves if they appear. To encourage new flower bud development, remove dead flower heads, called deadheading.
π Plant Health: Aphids are a common pest, but you can use our prevention tricks to keep pests at bay!
πΊ Harvest: To use the flower petals, harvest by snipping off flowers at their individual stems, then pluck the petals from the flower head. Avoid the bitter center of the flower. To enjoy as a cut flower, harvest by cutting the flower just before it blooms, when the petals are close to opening, and place in water. Alternatively, you can place the whole plant in a Gardyn Vase to enjoy its beauty in any room, cut-free!
