My sprouts are turning yellow or dying - what happened?
Sprouts can change colors for a few reasons.
If only the lowest (first) pair of leaves are turning yellow but the rest of the leaves look healthy, this can be a normal sign that the plant is simply growing up. When a sprout no longer depends on its seed and first leaves for nutrients because it is taking in plant food through the roots, it's normal for these first leaves to yellow, shrivel, and fall off.
If the whole sprout seems to be shriveling up, wilting, or otherwise dying, it could mean that the sprout was introduced to plant food too early. Premature plant food exposure can shock sprouts, sometimes to the point of killing them. Depending on when you notice it, it can be possible to revive these yCubes.
Other reasons for shriveling sprouts could be overwatering, which you can avoid by making sure your SOW Date is accurate so Kelby can water your young sprouts the appropriate amount. This is especially important during your plants' first few weeks of growth, which is why we let everyone benefit from Kelby's specialized water schedules during their first few weeks of growth after resetting their SOW Date.
Finally, just like in nature, there's always a chance that some plants just don't make it to maturity. This is why we recommend waiting about a week after your sprouts have first been exposed to plant food before trimming away some sprouts in each yCube, ensuring you're keeping the healthiest sprouts that will grow into the strongest plants.
