Origin

Torenia is native to tropical and temperate zones. Its name was given in reference to the Swedish naturalist Olof Torén (1718-1753). It is also commonly called the “wishbone flower” because the pollen-producing stamens inside its blossoms form a shape that resembles - you guessed it - a chicken wishbone.

Qualities

Torenia flowers are edible and offer a pleasant, gentle scent. The petals display shades of burgundy, deep blue, yellow, magenta, rose, and white against a backdrop of deep green foliage.

Use

Torenia flowers are edible and make beautiful garnishes that offer a pleasant, gentle scent. You can also enjoy them as cut flowers, or cut-free using the Gardyn Vase.

Care & Harvest

✂️ Pruning: Check the roots monthly and trim any that are brown or extending past the yPod. To encourage bushier growth, occasionally pinch off the tops of the developing stalks. Remove dead flower heads by pinching at their base, called deadheading, to redirect energy to new flower bud development. At the same time, also trim back the stem to just above the first set of full, healthy leaves to keep it neat and prevent rot.

🌻 Harvest: To harvest the flowers to use as a garnish, pinch off individual blooms behind the flower head. You can enjoy your Torenia flowers’ beauty cut-free by placing them in the Gardyn Vase. Alternatively, snip as many stems as desired just above the last set of healthy leaves and place in water.
