Tank Refresh Guide: When, Why and How

Edited

What is a Tank Refresh?

A Tank Refresh means fully draining your Gardyn tank, cleaning it, and refilling it with fresh water mixed with the correct plant food dose.

It resets your nutrient baseline and keeps your plants growing in balanced, stable conditions.

At a glance

  • What: Full drain, clean and refill with fresh water and plant food.

  • When: At least every 4 weeks

  • Goal: Restore clean, balanced nutrient conditions

  • Tank size:

    • Gardyn Home= 5 gallons

    • Gardyn Studio= 4 gallons

Plant food per 1 gallon (dose for your current growth stage):

  • True leaves/Vegetative Growth; 1/2 tsp per gallon

  • Mature/Blooming/Fruiting: 1 tsp per gallon

Refreshing does not reset your plant food dosage. always refill based on your plants’ current growth stage.

How you know its time:

Your Gardyn app is designed to help you stay on track with your monthly Tank Refresh.

Water Widget

The Water controls widget on the app home screen shows the Tank Refresh reminders for all Gardyners, regardless of whether that device has a active membership:

  • Visible 7 days before due date

  • Orange icon= coming soon

  • Red icon= due or overdue

Tap the Water widget to view instructions and mark the task complete.

Kelby Task

If you have an active membership, Kelby will also send you a Tank Refresh task in the app when its time. Complete the refresh and log the date directly in the task.

When to Refresh

  • At least every 4 weeks

  • Sooner if you notice:

    • Yellowing leaves

    • Leaf edge burn

    • Yellowing between leaf veins

Over time, plants absorb water and nutrients at different rates. Even with weekly top offs, nutrient ratios can drift. A monthly refresh resets your system back to a clean, stable baseline.

Steps to Refresh Your Tank

1. Prep Your Gardyn

  • Switch off and unplug

  • Place a towel on the floor

  • Lift the pump to the upper position

  • Unlock the lid locks

If you have a Gardyn Dolly, position it nearby to safely move your tank closer to a sink.

2. Lift by the Columns (not the lights)

Stand your Gardyn’s upper half on the towel.

3. Drain and Clean Your Tank

  • Pour out existing water

  • Clean with water, a soft sponge, and a sprinkle of baking soda

  • No soap needed

Wipe down the lid, tank, and columns as you go.

Safety note:

Do not lift a full tank. Use a siphon, jug, or container to remove water first. Lift only when the tank feels safe for you to move.

4. Refill with Fresh Water + Plant Food (1 Gallon at a Time)

Fill a clean 1-gallon container with warm tap water. Add the correct Plant Food dose for your plants’ current growth stage. Shake to mix, then pour into the tank.

You can use:

  • The white measuring spoon (1 tsp / 5 mL) included in your box

  • The Gardyn Adjustable Spoon designed for common Gardyn dosages

Tip: Clean, food-grade 1-gallon containers (like water jugs or milk cartons) work well.

5. Repeat Until Full

  • Gardyn Home: 5 gallons total

  • Gardyn Studio: 4 gallons total

Optional: Add HydroBoost according to your device type and water source.

6. Reattach Your Gardyn

Lift by the columns to replace the top half onto the tank. Lower the pump and lock the lid.

7. Plug In and Turn On

Your Gardyn may take about 5 minutes to reboot. Do not press the silver button. The lights will resume their schedule.

8. Log Your Tank Refresh in the App

After completing your refresh, log the date in the app to keep your reminders accurate.

  • Your Tank Refresh countdown resets to 28 days from the date you select.

  • With membership, you can view your next due date anytime in the Task Center.

Logging ensures your monthly schedule stays aligned and helps you maintain consistent nutrient balance.

Why Tank Refresh Matters in the Nutrient Lifecycle

Your plants perform best when they start from a clean, full, correctly dosed tank baseline.

  • Tank top-offs (short term maintenance): Add water and plant food gallon by gallon to keep your tank consistently full as plants consume it.

  • Tank Refreshes (long term maintenance): Drain, clean and reset the entire system to restore balanced nutrient ratios.

Top-offs keep conditions steady week to week while refreshes restore balance month to month.

Together, they create the stable nutrient environment that drives healthy roots, strong growth and better harvests.
