How do I prune?

At a Glance

  • Pruning is an important part of your Gardyn routine, but use it selectively.

  • Removing too many leaves or branches can stunt your plant's growth.

  • When done correctly, pruning helps your plant thrive by focusing its resources on new growth, flower and fruit development, and staying within its designated growing area on your Gardyn.

  • Find variety-specific pruning advice in the Plant Book, and watch our how-to video above!

What is pruning?

Pruning means selectively removing part of a plant. You can remove individual leaves, or whole or partial branches.

Defoliating is sometimes substituted for the word pruning, as it also means "removing leaves".

Often, pruning involves cutting away yellowing, browning, or otherwise unproductive leaves and branches that are no longer helping the plant photosynthesize.

Pruning can also involve removing healthy parts of the plant for other reasons, such as:

  • Refocusing the plant's resources on flower or fruit development

  • Ensuring a ripening fruit gets enough light

  • Containing a plant's size so it doesn't hide other plants on your Gardyn

Why is pruning important?

Pruning enables you to selectively redirect the plant's resources to growth in the areas you leave behind.

Whether you're looking for new leaves, delayed flowering, or stronger fruit development, pruning helps your plant put its resources to work.

Pruning is also an important part of keeping your Gardyn plants under control. Not only does it control their size, but it helps remove leaves and branches that, if left on your Gardyn, could attract pests, block airflow, or shadow another plant from the lights.

Do all plants require pruning?

No, and in fact, most Gardyn plants do not! For variety-specific pruning recommendations, check out your plants' pages in the Plant Book.

Remember, you can't click "undo" when you prune your plants! Start small, go slow, and be mindful of what you're leaving behind, not just what you're removing. With the right amount of pruning, your Gardyn plants will thrive.
