How Do I Know When to Harvest My Plants?

Edited

Many plants on your Gardyn can be harvested before they are fully grown. Starting early helps stimulate new growth and helps you build the habit of harvesting weekly across your Gardyn.

For most lettuces and leafy greens, your first harvest can begin when the outer leaves are about 4 inches tall. Start small by harvesting a few leaves from several plants. Harvesting from multiple plants each time helps prevent cutting any one plant back too heavily and makes it easier to build a steady weekly harvest routine as more plants become ready.

As a general rule, always leave at least 1/3 of the plant in place so it can continue to regrow.

If you have an active Gardyn membership, Kelby may guide you through major harvest milestones, including your first leafy harvest and herb harvest.

Plants become ready at different times

Not all plants in your Gardyn will be ready to harvest at the same time. Most gardens follow a natural progression.

  • Lettuces and leafy greens are usually ready first and are often the starting point for your first harvest.

  • Herbs typically establish a little more slowly but benefit from regular trimming once they are mature.

  • Fruiting plants and flowers take the longest, as they must first grow, flower, and produce fruit or blooms.

Because of this progression, your harvest routine will gradually expand as more plants mature.

3 simple rules for every harvest

No matter what you are growing, three simple rules apply:

  • Leave at least 1/3 of the plant behind so it can regrow

  • Harvest often, at least once a week

  • Harvest across your Gardyn, taking a small amount from several plants rather than cutting back just one

Regular harvesting promotes continued growth, while leaving enough of the plant behind allows it to regrow.

Following these three rules helps support continued growth and helps you build a steady harvest routine and get more from your Gardyn over time.
