I get a lot of natural light inside - can I turn my Gardyn lights off on sunny days?
One of the great parts about your Gardyn is that it can thrive in nearly any indoor space, regardless of natural light, thanks to its full-spectrum LED lights.
If you live in a space that gets a lot of natural light, you might be tempted to turn your Gardyn's lights off during the day. For optimal growth, however, we recommend keeping your Gardyn's lights on (and on a schedule that includes 14-16 hours of Boost light daily) regardless of your home's environment. Here's why:
Gardyn plants are not the same as certain house plants that can handle more filtered, lower levels of light. Gardyn plants are most similar to those that would grow outside in a field in direct sunlight. That means that even some sun through a window is not enough for Gardyn varieties, which require bright, direct, and sustained light every day, to thrive.
When plants don't get the light they crave, they can grow leggy (tall and super skinny), prematurely bolt (jump to their natural end of life), and grow pale.
All of the above effects on a plant cause it to be more stressed, which can lead to further problems as a consequence. Just like humans, when plants are stressed, they become more susceptible to attacks on their health. Stressed plants are more likely to contract diseases and attract pests, which can sense a plant's faulty immune system (and tasty snack appeal).
We know your Gardyn's light can be pretty bright in the beginning especially, but you'll get used to it, we promise! Plus, the more your plants grow in, the easier the light will become on your eyes with less reflected back by the columns.
